Fundamentally, my job as a lawyer is to help people. Of course, it is my job, which means that I do charge people for providing that help. However, I do understand the concern and worry that many people have when they need to or believe that they should hire an attorney to help them with a pressing issue.

Sometimes, people who call me or come to my office are meeting with an attorney for the first time, and may feel nervous or intimidated and will definitely have a lot of questions about their issues. Whatever the specifics of the case, one question almost always – and quite understandably – comes up: “How much is this going to cost me?”

Ignoring a Legal Problem Will Only Make It Worse

Fear of the unknown answer to that question can often lead people to avoid calling a lawyer because they are worried that they won’t be able to afford their services. However, ignoring a legal problem or failing to get help because you are worried about how much a lawyer will cost you may only end up costing you more in the long run.

Regardless of what your legal issue is, you should not hesitate to at least reach out to me, because I can tell you with absolute certainty that calling me or meeting with me for a limited initial consultation to discuss your issues and concerns will cost you nothing, whether you retain me or not.

After that initial consultation, and if you retain me, there are a number of different ways that I charge for my services; which arrangement will apply to your case largely depends on the type of matter at issue. Primarily, however, I bill for my services on an hourly basis.

When it comes to billing, I endeavor to set expectations clearly; while some matters can be resolved fairly early or are of a more predictable nature, some disputed cases can become more complicated and take significantly longer. I’ll let you know upfront about the potential directions a matter might take, and will keep you consistently informed about the status of your case.

From the first moment I meet with you until your matter is concluded, I will strive to be fair, transparent, and accommodating in my billing practices. I want to empower you with information so you know what to expect in the future and what has been done for you in the past. I want you to review and fully understand your bills and reach out to me if something is unclear. If a case has taken a turn that will result in a monthly bill being particularly high, I will make every effort to give you a heads-up so that you can plan accordingly.
